ABORTION INFORMATION

Dr. Damon L. Stutes leads a team specialized in providing unequaled patient comfort, care and safety. Housed in a nationally renowned facility built specifically to provide safe confidential abortion services in a comfortable caring environment, the West End Women's Medical Group specializes only in abortion and women's reproductive services. It is literally the practice that wrote the book on the latest abortion techniques, a book being used by physicians and universities around the world.

The Clinic is Certified by the National Abortion Federation and the National Coalition of Abortion Providers.

It is no wonder patients come to Reno from across the nation.

The Abortion Experience

The pregnancy will first be confirmed by ultrasound, then the patient will meet with a counselor who will address any questions or concerns that the patient may have. The counselor will review the procedure used at West End Women's Medical Group, outline after-care instructions, and provide the patient with appropriate post-abortion medications. Patients are encouraged to discuss any additional questions with Dr. Stutes. Appropriate pre-abortion medication will be given to each patient to help them relax.

The abortion procedure used at West End Women's Medical Group is the simplest and most modern method of pregnancy termination. A vacuum aspiration method is used whereby the pregnancy is removed with a flexible plastic tube (cannula) that is about the size of a soda straw. The entire procedure normally takes no more than 2 or 3 minutes. The doctor's assistant and or counselor will be with the patient throughout the procedure.

The degree of discomfort experienced during the procedure depends on the individual. Most women compare the feeling to cramps experienced during their monthly menstrual period. Cramping may occur at the end of the abortion because the uterus is contracting back to its normal size. The cramping generally subsides very quickly.

West End Women's Medical Group Requirements

Although the procedure itself takes only a few minutes, patients should plan their stay at West End Women's Medical Group to be approximately 2 hours. Most of this time is spent filling out paperwork, talking with a counselor, and resting in our recovery lounge following the abortion. Most patients are allowed to leave our facility after resting for approximately 30 minutes.

Patients may not operate a moving vehicle for 8 hours following their abortion, because even though a patient who has been medicated may feel "normal" the medication affects their perceptions, like having too much alcohol to drink; therefore, it is necessary that a friend or family member who is capable of driving accompany the patient to the office. Before any patient is medicated, the person who is driving them must sign a paper certifying they are driving the patient home. Our staff will be happy to assist patients in making other arrangements for transportation from the clinic (bus, taxi, etc.) if a friend or family member is unavailable. A waiting room is provided where friends or family members may wait for the patient while the abortion is performed. There are no children allowed in the clinic; therefore, alternative arrangements must be made.

We accept only cash for the abortion services provided at West End Women's Medical Group. We do not accept personal checks, credit cards or money orders. Payment must be made prior to receiving services. As a courtesy, our staff will assist patients in filling out insurance forms; however, we do not bill insurance companies for services rendered.

Possible Complications of First Trimester Abortion

First trimester abortion (under 12 weeks of pregnancy) is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in the United States. Statistically, abortion is a very safe procedure. Serious complications rarely occur. Hospitalization for treatment of a serious post-abortion complication is very rare.

All patients will be required to sign an Authorization and Consent Form for abortion services rendered at West End Women's Medical Group. The consent includes the risks and complications that can result from the abortion.

Effects of Abortion on Future Fertility

The Center for Disease Control conducted an extensive review of studies worldwide about the effect of abortion on future childbearing. They concluded that vacuum aspiration does not pose a measurable risk to a woman's childbearing ability. Compared to women who carry their first pregnancy to term, women who terminate their first pregnancy by vacuum aspiration abortion are at no greater risk of infertility or ectopic pregnancy in the future.

Overall, the effects of one or even multiple suction abortions on future childbearing are small except for the very rare woman who has a severe complication that necessitates the removal of the uterus or a severe untreated infection that causes scarring in the tubes or uterus.
